The Week In Comments, 14th Edition.

This Week In Comments (TWICs): Predicting the future (without considering the past?), going in circles, re-branding home base, & online community management.

The week of November 11-17, 2011.

Confused of Calcutta: Thinking About Streams of Information at Work
(11.13.11)

What’s more, I find it interesting how difficult it seems to think about predicting the future without some reliance upon the past. There’s that bias you mentioned (as well as the genius of the solving unseen problems)! Common boilerplate reminds us, “Past performance does not guarantee future results,” yet we often base our forecasts almost entirely on past performance.

(11.14.11)

Sense of direction – literal or figurative – only comes from knowing where one is in relation to where one wishes to be. When the perception of reality or vision of the future is vague, we’re merely trudging along toward disappointment, methinks.

(11.14.11)

Actually, I’ve had a similar revelation of late. It’s funny how, no sooner do we reach first base, we’re stealing second, stretching to third before we find ourselves right back at home base with a newfound inspiration to do something more meaningful with it.

NEW BLOG DISCOVERY!
Hat tip to John Falchetto for making the introduction. Not only have I picked up a new RSS feed for my dailies folder, Deborah Ng of Kommein inspired the following two comments from me AND a post of my own (which I suspect will end up being something of a recurring theme ’round these parts moving forward) in a single day.

Kommein: 5 Tips for Organic Online Community Growth
(11.14.11)

Lately, my focus has shifted more toward the evolution of the way things have been done over the years.  My target audience is already comfortable with the concept of online community. In fact, they expect it, so adoption isn’t a major concern. My current challenge is increasing awareness of a new way of doing things in such a way as to encourage trial with the future in mind.

Kommein: Online Community Managers: When Community Should be About You
(11.14.11)

Like I said, the concept of manufactured community is a little foreign to me. I don’t think it should be necessary to remind people who is in charge because I think as much authority as possible should be delegated to the masses, and the processes for doing so clearly communicated in such a way as to allow the community to remind each other who is in charge in which areas and to what extent.
